“The ‘Beyond My Skin Campaign’ is meant to celebrate Albinism. Albinism is the lack of melanin which is the protein that is needed to create pigmentation for the skin. This effects the hair, skin, and eyes. Beauty is skin deep. When you see people with albinism or anyone that is different, you should go deeper than what’s on the surface.”- Diandra Forrest
People with albinism face multiple forms of discrimination worldwide. Albinism is still profoundly misunderstood, socially and medically. The physical appearance of persons with albinism is often the object of erroneous beliefs and myths influenced by superstition, which foster their marginalization and social exclusion. This leads to various forms of stigma and discrimination. *Excerpt from United Nations International Albinism Awareness Day Website
