BFF Partnerships & Product Collaborations

Project Ghana

To sustain and grow our empowerment initiatives through the arts, Beauty for Freedom (BFF) partnered with Challenging Heights teaching an arts therapy initiative featuring photography, watercolor painting, and mural workshops to over 300 youth at the CH Friends International
Academy and 58 young survivors of labor trafficking currently housed in the recovery program at The Hovde House Rescue Center. Beauty for Freedom brought in over 150 lbs of art supplies and professional DSLR camera equipment the youth used to create original artwork in the workshop series from June 24-July 7th, 2017.

Artist Statement

“I’ve always been attracted to the vibrancy and complexity in African textiles, which are very much representative of the African people, who tend to have beautifully warm and colorful energy. I felt that by decorating this black and white photograph with the vivacity of the prints, it would help convey the outrageousness that is also expressed in boy’s face and eyes. It was a huge pleasure working with this brave young man and all the other kids at Challenging Heights throughout this project and I hope this final artwork gives you a sense of those very emotions I felt.”

“With all the stuff this beautiful young girl faced, she still had the smirk on her face She seemed content and wiser for her years. She’s probably seen a lot, but still seems to have a sense of humor about it all. I think that’s the main thing that attracted me to drawing her portrait”

Artist Statement

Freedom is a human right and everyone deserves the right to be free. Having taught the youth of Challenging Heights, I observed how resilient every child was despite having lost their childhood. Behind every smile, they carry an unknown struggle no one can comprehend and they also carry hope. As an artist, who worked with both Isaac (photographer) and Christian (photographed), I knew that both of these students were talented, creative and proud to be from Ghana. I reimagined this piece around Christian and his hopefulness of the future and how he envisions himself defending those who can’t defend themselves. Christian’s perspective on his future is a direct reflection of his portrait and inspired me to design stars around his head. I used saturated colors inspired by Ghana’s Flag because Christian is a star whose light illuminates and I want him to see this portrait the way his friend Isaac and I see him; Proudly.

Artist Statement

“The art for therapy program is really one of the reasons I joined Beauty for freedom. It’s really about empowering youth and giving these kids, the opportunity and a voice. Going to Ghana and doing the photography workshops, and a lot of these kids have never even held a camera. Next thing you know they’re going around their community taking pictures and all of a sudden those images are printed out for them to see and hold, then pasted them around their community. They felt the empowerment. Like they were proud of their work. Now here we are back in New York City painting on top of their portrait. It’s really cool to see it comes full circle.”
